Africa’s energy giant—Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery—is powering regional energy independence, while Ghana leads 123 nations at the UN to demand historical justice for the continent. Together, they signal how Africa is turning geopolitical chaos and injustice into sovereignty.
The crisis in the Middle East has sent shockwaves through global energy supply chains. Attacks on refineries and disruptions in traditional shipping routes have created an urgent demand for alternative suppliers. Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery—Africa’s largest—stands ready to fill the gap, exporting refined products across the continent and beyond. In an insightful discussion with Danilo Desiderio, the founder & CEO of Desiderio Consultants and an expert in African customs, trade and transport policies & regulations, and the African Continental Free Trade Area, he noted that the disruptions in the global energy supply chain are creating a historic window for African energy producers, and with deliberate policies, this moment of geopolitical leverage can translate into tangible economic stability and energy sovereignty for the continent.Ghana’s UN Resolution on Slave Trade and the Fight for ReparationsOn 25th March 2026, Ghana, on behalf of African and Caribbean nations, steered a landmark resolution through the UN General Assembly. By a vote of 123 to three, the body formally recognized the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity,” calling for apologies, the return of looted cultural property, and the creation of a reparations fund. Abobakr Mohamed Abbakar Khussein, an assistant professor at a Russian university who has been closely following the negotiations and implications of this decision, discussed with Sputnik Africa what makes this resolution different.Discover more insights from our outstanding guests on the Pan-African Frequency podcast, proudly brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Pocket Casts, Afripods, and Podcast Addict► Check out all the episodes of Pan-African Frequency

Moments of Dominance: Africa’s Energy Rise Meets Its Case for Reparations
In an insightful discussion with Danilo Desiderio, the founder & CEO of Desiderio Consultants and an expert in African customs, trade and transport policies & regulations, and the African Continental Free Trade Area, he noted that the disruptions in the global energy supply chain are creating a historic window for African energy producers, and with deliberate policies, this moment of geopolitical leverage can translate into tangible economic stability and energy sovereignty for the continent.
“Nigeria's fuel export boom, driven mostly by the Dangote refinery, represents a major opportunity for Africa, but it is important to clarify that exporting more fuel doesn't automatically translate into cheaper energy for domestic business and citizens [...] These events are underscoring the urgency for African producers to elevate their strategic importance in global energy supply chains. Seizing this opportunity requires, first of all, long-term planning, strategic investment, and risk diversification. Producers must sign long-term contracts and make medium- and long-term investments to ensure that refineries and gas plants operate without interruption and that they can expand capacity over time [...] African producers must spread their supply across multiple partners and destinations rather than focusing on a few markets or, even worse, on a single buyer,” Desiderio indicated.
Ghana’s UN Resolution on Slave Trade and the Fight for Reparations
On 25th March 2026, Ghana, on behalf of African and Caribbean nations, steered a landmark resolution through the UN General Assembly. By a vote of 123 to three, the body formally recognized the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity,” calling for apologies, the return of looted cultural property, and the creation of a reparations fund. Abobakr Mohamed Abbakar Khussein, an assistant professor at a Russian university who has been closely following the negotiations and implications of this decision, discussed with Sputnik Africa what makes this resolution different.
“Ghana's initiative is more than a symbolic win. It signals that Africa is no longer content to be a passive recipient of international law. It is now actively reshaping the moral architecture of global order to address historical injustices that underpin Western inequality [...] Africa can monetize historical harm into concrete capital for infrastructure, health, and education, break the aid dependency trap, reclaim policy sovereignty, and force recalibration of international partnership from exploitation to equity,” the professor noted.
