SA's Mining Sector Features Cutting-Edge Technologies: South African Expert
South Africa has the potential to become a major African hub for critical minerals processing due to ongoing advancements in its mining industry, Glen Nwalia of the University of Witwatersrand told Sputnik Africa.
The country is deploying high-tech solutions to mitigate harsh working conditions for miners and unlock access to previously hard-to-reach mining areas, he highlighted.
These innovations include:
🟠light communication systems;
🟠portable sensors;
🟠non-explosive blasting technology.
"This also places us strategically, given the fact that we host over 80% of all known PGMs [platinum-group metals] in the world, followed by manganese, chrome, vanadium, titanium, iron, just to mention a few," the expert noted.
