Son of Uganda's President Proposes Arrest of 'Fake Pastors,' Calls for Theology Degree Requirement
If the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a civic organization and political pressure group that launched in 2024, takes power, it will fight against unregulated churches by requiring church leaders to hold a degree in theology, according to Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In a post on X, Muhoozi—the Chief of Defense Force and PLU chairman—suggested that such pastors could face charges of "insulting God."
The proposal mirrors neighboring Rwanda's 2018 reforms requiring pastors to hold a theology degree, a measure aimed at professionalizing religious leadership and preventing exploitation, which led to the closure of thousands of non-compliant churches.
