Kenya's Military Escort Plan for Its Exports to Middle East Difficult to Sustain, Says Expert

Any Kenyan military-backed maritime security plan for exports to the Middle East would be possible in theory, but sustaining it will be difficult in practice, disaster management professional Shem Kipkoech told Sputnik Africa.

From a military standpoint, Kenya lacks a fleet of ocean-going vessels with advanced defense systems and its naval forces are primarily designed for coastal defense, Kipkoech noted.

In addition, the East African nation does not operate a national shipping line, with the country heavily reliant on fuel imports from the Middle East, he added.

"Nairobi must balance security needs with diplomatic questions […] any escort operation will likely depend on the international partners," Kipkoech suggested.
