UN's Resolution on Slavery Weakens Key Historical Barriers to Reparations: Ghana-Based Expert
Ghana's proposed UN resolution has dramatically shifted the whole conversation on reparations for the slave trade, geopolitical researcher Simeone Azoska told Sputnik Africa.
Though the resolution does not mandate reparations, Azoska noted Ghana succeeded in framing the transatlantic slave trade as the worst crime against humanity, bolstering advocacy platforms and equipping domestic courts with intellectual tools for litigation.
According to the expert, Ghana's resolution has contributed to overcoming three major historical barriers to reparations:
🟠non-retroactivity of law;
🟠the state's secession complexities;
🟠quantification of harm.
