Middle East Conflict Hits Tourism in Zanzibar, Calls for Stronger Regional Focus: Expert

The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran is disrupting flights and driving up travel costs, directly affecting tourism in Zanzibar, according to Thabit A. Abdulrahman, a member of the Zanzibar Association of Tour Operators Board.

"The Middle East is the connector for airlines [...] Conflicts have caused the flight disruptions, making it harder for tourists to reach Zanzibar and other African destinations," Abdulrahman told Sputnik Africa, noting that fewer operating airlines have increased international travel costs

Key strategies to build resilience:

🟠Boost regional and domestic tourism: Reducing reliance on international visitors by promoting intra-African travel and showcasing the continent's rich culture and heritage.

🟠Strengthen regional cooperation: Enhancing collaboration among African nations to share resources and promote tourism within the continent.

🟠Invest in infrastructure: Developing high-quality airports and tourism facilities to attract and accommodate more visitors.

🟠Diversify tourism markets: Moving beyond a narrow focus on international arrivals to build a more resilient sector.
