Nigeria Expands Clean Mobility Push to Include Electric Vehicles, Says Presidency
President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas to include electric vehicles, renaming it the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, special presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga announced.
The initiative will now coordinate Nigeria's clean mobility strategy nationwide, overseeing both gas-driven and electric vehicles, along with related infrastructure such as refueling stations and EV charging networks.
To make vehicle conversions widely accessible, the president directed the initiative to work with financial institutions on cost-effective financing structures and to accelerate the deployment of mobile refueling units while permanent infrastructure scales up.
Launched in 2023 to cushion against the impact of petrol subsidy removal, the initiative aims to leverage Nigeria's abundant gas reserves to lower transport costs, strengthen energy security, and reduce reliance on imported fuel.
