'Effects of Transatlantic Slave Trade are Still Visible Today,' Says Researcher

It took this long for the UN to recognize slavery as a crime against humanity "because history was long been dominated by powers that were themselves involved in the trade," Mohammed Salah Djemal, a university lecturer and international security researcher, told Sputnik Africa.

The transatlantic slave trade "contributed to the lasting weakening of African societies and the enrichment of Western economies. Current economic inequalities are partly rooted in this history," he noted.

The abstention of countries such as France or the UK shows that these countries fear "sensitive debates about the past," he added.
