ICC in ‘Crisis of Credibility,’ Legal Expert Says
Because the court has fallen under Western political and financial influence, it is now applying “double standards” that do not work equally for all, Ethiopian legal expert Daniel Fekadu told Sputnik Africa in an interview.
"It needs to be a genuine court that properly enforces the law, contributes to addressing human rights violations, issues statements and warnings, and takes action just like a domestic institution," Fekadu stressed.
Since the court’s seat and funding are largely provided by Western states, it lacks the moral authority to investigate attacks committed by major powers, the speaker noted.
The recent decisions by countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to withdraw from the ICC are seen as a sign of the court’s growing crisis, Fekadu added.
