Legacy of Slave Trade & How to Fight It: Perspective by Kenyan CEO

In East Africa, there's a psychological distance from the transatlantic slave trade, Claire Atieno Otieno, CEO of JM-Qafri Methuselah company, told Sputnik Africa on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

However, she noted, the Atlantic slave trade stunted Africa's growth and development. She named several persistent consequences:

🟠Extraction of human capital impeded Africa’s economic growth;
🟠Unpaid labor grew Western wealth, creating disparities that persist today;
🟠Lack of educational curriculum on repercussions and solutions persists;

Otieno underlined the need to "focus on the current development going on in Africa."

"The most rational thing right now would be to invest in transnational cooperatives in agriculture, mining and other sectors, [...] the influence from the West is weakening [...] at a time when Africa's economy is growing rapidly," the expert noted.
