US Threatens to Withhold HIV Funding Unless Zambia Expands Mineral Access: Reports
The ultimatum may leave 1.3 million Zambians without life-saving HIV/AIDS treatment unless the country agrees to give US corporations easier access to its vast copper, lithium, and cobalt reserves, according to a draft US State Department memo.
Zambia has already rejected a previous version of the deal, with its Health Ministry calling the conditions incompatible with national interests.
Diplomatic channels are being used to address concerns, and "the nation will be informed once a final position is reached," stated Zambia’s Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa.
