63 Ancestral Remains Reburied in South Africa After Centuries in Europe

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa officiated the reburial ceremony of Khoi & San remains at the Kinderlê Monument in Steinkopf, marking the culmination of repatriation efforts from Europe.

"These remains are a small group of thousands of illegally removed remains of indigenous people during the late 19th century and the early 20th century, [that] would be traded or donated to newly established museums and universities," a statement by the SA government said.

The statement stressed that for centuries, San and Khoi people endured numerous violations:

🟠colonial conquest,

🟠land dispossession,

🟠cultural erasure and removal,

🟠race-based scientific research,

🟠exploitation of ancestral remains.
