Vibrant Night of Sacred Strings: Ethiopia's Begena Masters Unite in Addis Ababa to Keep Holy Tradition Alive
A special evening of begena music, organized by a dedicated youth and education wing ofthe Ethiopian Orthodox Church, was held in Addis Ababa on Sunday, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
This event brought together dozens of skilled begena players—masters of Ethiopia's ancient ten-stringed lyre, often called the "Harp of King David."
The purpose of the program is to preserve one of the principal spiritual instruments of praise and prayer in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and pass it on to the coming generation, said the chairman of the organizing group.
Watch the videos to hear the begena’s deep, meditative tones.
