West African States Must Be Unified Force: Senegal's Prime Minister

The states of West Africa must achieve close integration in order to be able to influence the course of events in the world, Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko told local media.

"A country can develop, even a small one, but it cannot be powerful alone. Only major powers have influence in the modern world," media quoted the prime minister as saying.

Sonko stressed the need to boost ECOWAS effectiveness as the region's leading organization while expressing hope that a strong West African bloc—economically, politically, and militarily assertive—will emerge within the next twenty years.

However, without people's participation, mobilization and integration are impossible—otherwise, it is not integration at all, he stated.

The video shows a recent ECOWAS consultation on the region's future prospects.
