Why SA Backs Palestine and Cuba: Sovereignty is Non-Negotiable, Ex-Minister Says

South Africa defends its sovereignty as a core principle—and that same principle drives its solidarity with Cuba, Palestine and the Sahrawi people "struggling almost in the same way that we did," former Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu told Sputnik Africa at Johannesburg's Human Rights Day march.

She also acknowledged domestic battles with poverty, unemployment and inequality, urging communities to join the ANC in driving change.

With freedom won just 32 years ago, Zulu stressed that remembering Sharpeville's 69 victims matters: young South Africans must learn how freedom was achieved—not to be held hostage by history, but to understand the sacrifices that made it possible.
