Africa Flips the Script: From Extraction Zone to Industrial Hub—SA’s FM
While global critical mineral strategies overwhelmingly focus on extracting raw materials from Africa, South Africa's G20 presidency pushed back: minerals must be beneficiated and industrialized at source, Ronald Lamola told Sputnik Africa.
The world must share skills and financing to enable Africa to process its resources—then trade finished or semi-finished products globally, not just raw exports, he noted.
Ahead of South Africa's SADC chairmanship, Lamola highlighted the bloc's vast mineral wealth—holding up to 70% of global lithium and platinum group metals—and stressed that removing non-tariff barriers could lift intra-regional trade beyond today's 21%, powering shared growth across Southern Africa.
