All South Africans Must Be 'Champions of Constitution': President

Signing the Constitution was one of the most important acts of South Africa’s democratic era, creating an equal and free society, President Cyril Ramaphosa said during Human Rights Day celebrations in Kimberley.

“It set the coordinates for a journey towards a just, inclusive, and united future for all South Africans. This is a journey that we remain on to this day. The Constitution is our greatest source of national pride not only because of what it contains, but because of how it was written,” he stated.

President Ramaphosa highlighted key achievements since its adoption:

🟠the National School Nutrition Program, feeding nine million schoolchildren;

🟠social assistance: old age, disability, and child support grants;

🟠80% of the population now having access to clean water and adequate sanitation;

🟠800,000 students from poor families were studying for free at universities and colleges last year.

Nelson Mandela signed South Africa's Constitution in Sharpeville in 1996—the same town where police massacred anti-apartheid protesters on March 21, 1960.
