Kenya Launches Major SGR Project Between Key Economic Centers: Media

The Standard Gauge Railway aims to improve transport accessibility and boost trade across Western Kenya by facilitating the flow of goods, which is currently hindered by costly and time-consuming cargo transfers, according to local media.

“The SGR extension will position Kenya as the regional trade and logistics hub, linking Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Port of Mombasa while unlocking the economic potential of western Kenya,” President William Ruto said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

The railway will feature the following characteristics:

🟠Total distance: 369 kilometers.

🟠Infrastructure: 79 railway bridges, 8 tunnels and 376 culverts.

🟠Station network: 26 stations.

In 2014, the Kenyan government decided to replace the old colonial railway with a modern SGR, the president said on social media.
