After Being Wiped Out by Poachers, Rhinos Return to Ugandan Park for the First Time in 40 Years
Two southern white rhinos arrived at Valley National Park on Tuesday, the first of eight to be reintroduced after poachers killed the last one there in 1983, according to a press release from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
"This moment marks the beginning of a new rhino story for Kidepo Valley National Park. [...] Over time, additional rhinos will be introduced to gradually rebuild a viable and thriving rhino population in Kidepo," James Musinguzi, Executive Director of UWA, noted.
The rhinos were wiped out from the park during a period of political instability when poachers exploited the chaos to hunt the animals for their horns and meat.
