Ghana Trade Minister Pushes to Ease Border Trade Bottlenecks
Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has called for urgent action to remove bureaucratic bottlenecks at the Noepe–Akanu Joint Border Post to improve trade flows between Ghana, Togo, and the wider West African region.
During a working visit, she noted that despite investments in modern infrastructure, delays and poor coordination among border agencies continue to slow trade and increase costs for businesses.
The border remains a key corridor linking Anglophone and Francophone West Africa, making efficiency critical for regional integration.
Key issues identified include:
🟡Multiple checkpoints and lengthy inspection processes
🟡Inconsistent application of trade regulations
🟡Administrative duplication among agencies
The minister emphasized stronger collaboration among customs, immigration, and security services, alongside full implementation of ECOWAS trade protocols. She also highlighted the role of digitization and simplified documentation in reducing delays. She reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving trade conditions and positioning Ghana as a regional trade hub, in line with broader initiatives such as the AfCFTA.
