'Buy Local' is Strategic Imperative for South Africa, Says Minister
Amid global supply chain chaos fueled by the Middle East conflict, localization is a critical necessity for economic survival, Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni said at the 14th Annual Buy Local Summit.
The minister highlighted South Africa's "creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit", emphasizing that local farmers, artisans, tech startups, and small businesses form the economy's backbone.
"When we buy local, we do far more than purchase a product. We support jobs. We strengthen families. We invest in the future of South Africa," she added.
The minister outlined three critical shifts needed to scale localization:
🟠Consumer Behavior: South Africans must stop favoring global brands;
🟠Procurement Gaps: Both public and private sectors must use local supply chains, with a focus on suppliers from under-served groups—women, youth, and enterprises from townships and rural areas;
🟠Ecosystem Silos: Stakeholders—government, banks, big companies, and universities—must coordinate their efforts to help small businesses grow.
