Reparations for Slavery: Africa Challenges Western Laws, Says Ivorian Scholar

"Taking European states to court for the transatlantic slave trade [...] is complex, but it is not entirely ruled out," Mian Charles, a doctor in political and social philosophy, told Sputnik Africa.

The Geopolitical Turning Point

This initiative reflects Africa's desire for more balanced relations with former colonial powers, Mian Charles emphasized.

A "memory diplomacy" that places history at the heart of dialogue, without a brutal rupture: a negotiating tool for discussions on matters of common interest.

And if such legal action were to succeed?

According to the expert, reparations could then take three forms:

◾Symbolic: official acknowledgments;

◾Financial: reparation funds;

◾Structural: investments in education and infrastructure.

"Reparations rarely take the form of simple compensation," but rather aim to "co-construct a new relationship."
