The country's Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources remains in "constant engagement with industry players to explore all possible supply sources," as the current war in the Middle East has led to fuel supply disruptions and made a rise in energy prices increasingly inevitable, stated Gwede Mantashe at the 5th annual Southern Africa Oil & Gas Conference.South Africa must look for long-term solutions domestically, in developing fields like the Outeniqua and Orange basins, the minister noted.

South Africa Seeks New Oil Suppliers Amid Iran Crisis: Minister
17:12 16.03.2026 (Updated: 17:34 16.03.2026) The country's Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources remains in "constant engagement with industry players to explore all possible supply sources," as the current war in the Middle East has led to fuel supply disruptions and made a rise in energy prices increasingly inevitable, stated Gwede Mantashe at the 5th annual Southern Africa Oil & Gas Conference.
South Africa must look for long-term solutions domestically, in developing fields like the Outeniqua and Orange basins, the minister noted.
"One of the biggest challenges [...] remains the persistent opposition from environmental lobby groups who continue to block every oil and gas development initiative in our country," he added.
