Why Did Gulf States Stay Out of US–Iran Conflict? Iraqi Political Scientist Weighs In

Such a decision was likely based on strategic calculations rather than claims of hidden intelligence, Abdul Malik al-Husseini told Sputnik.

ℹ Some reports suggested Gulf states refrained from retaliation because intelligence indicated the US or Israel may have been behind attacks on their facilities. Al-Husseini rejected that explanation, noting that several Gulf countries had already faced Iranian strikes on military and economic sites.

Gulf governments instead relied on analytical assessments, according to the analyst. They were not part of the decision to start the war and had previously tried to prevent escalation through diplomacy.

Their advanced intelligence systems, close security cooperation with Western partners, and desire to protect domestic stability also played a role.

“The political situation and security environment of these countries, along with the stability and prosperity enjoyed by their societies, are sufficient to deter them from participating in a potentially protracted war—especially when the other side is Iran.”
