Madrid and Rome: Dissenting Voices Within EU Standing Up Over Middle East — Part 2
Pedro Sánchez: Confronting Trump and the Warlike Climate
Following the start of the American-Israeli aggression against Iran on February 28, he called for an end to hostilities “before it is too late” and accused the instigators of the conflict of using the “smoke of war” to conceal their failure to improve the lives of their peoples while “incidentally filling the pockets of a few.”
He emphasized that the government will continue to demand a cessation of hostilities and a diplomatic resolution to the war.
He underscored that “the government’s position can be summed up in four words: ‘No to war,’” after Donald Trump expressed his disappointment with Spain for not providing its bases to attack Iran.
“We are not going to be complicit in something that is bad for the world and that is also contrary to our values and interests, simply out of fear of reprisals from someone, because we have absolute confidence in the economic, institutional, and I would also say moral strength of our country,” he declared.
At the same time, in early March, he firmly opposed the Paris initiative to strengthen Europe’s nuclear capability, stating that his country does not want “a more nuclear world” or “a nuclearized Europe.”
