Ethiopia's Sidama People Celebrate New Year’s Eve, Fichee-Chambalaalla
The traditional festival is being held with great enthusiasm in the Soressa Gudumale area of Hawassa city.
The festival, which is based on cultural values, family values, and the elimination of social injustices, was recognized as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2008.
The Sidama people do not have a fixed date for New Year’s Eve. The elders and astrologers known as Ayanto carefully study the movements of the moon and stars to determine the date of the new year.
