Tanzania Becomes First in East Africa to Assemble Locomotives Locally

Tanzania has started assembling Meter Gauge Railway locomotives locally at the Pugu workshop in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzania Railway Corporation said in a statement (TRC).

TRC Director General Machibya Shiwa explained that delays in spare parts led to importing two ready-made locomotives from Malaysia, while parts for six more were sent to Pugu for local assembly.

The project has created jobs for 34 young Tanzanians and opened business chances for local suppliers of tools, materials, electrical items, and more, according to Shiwa.
