Informal Settlements to be Formalized in Namibia's Capital: Statement
Windhoek has launched a major planning initiative to expand basic services amid rapid urbanization, according to the city's statement.
Facing a severe shortage of serviced land, the municipality is upgrading living conditions in fast-growing unplanned areas—home to over 606,000 people nationwide—in a strong push toward a sustainable and inclusive urban future.
It highlights key challenges: inadequate sanitation, limited access to water, sewerage, and electricity, environmental degradation, pollution, disease outbreaks, and increased safety risks.
The formalization process involves:
town planning
environmental management
land surveying and registration
