New Giant Croc 'Lucivenator' Discovered, Study Finds
Researchers have identified a previously unknown crocodile species that roamed what is now Ethiopia more than three million years ago, according to a study published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
Christopher Brochu, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Iowa, describes the imposing predator with some notable features:
🟠Weight: 270 to 590 kilograms
🟠Length: 3.6 to 4.5 meters
🟠A prominent hump on its snout
The ancient reptile, named Lucivenator by scientists, lived alongside the early human ancestor known as Lucy. Researchers suggest the massive crocodile likely posed a real threat to Lucy and her kind.
