Beyond 'Empty Words': What Does Algeria Really Want From France? — Expert Explains
Algeria now considers itself "strong enough" to demand basic clarity regarding its colonial past, according to Charly Kengne, a Cameroonian analyst speaking with Sputnik Africa.
Rather than direct financial payments, Kengne explained that reparations could take other forms:
the return of archives, so that Algeria can write its own history;
the decontamination of nuclear test sites;
the funding of research centers to restore historical truth.
By legally classifying colonization as a crime, Algeria is holding France accountable, the analyst said.
“For Algeria, this is an act of national cohesion: by classifying colonization as a state crime, Algiers is enshrining its version of history and making any diplomatic normalization conditioned on the prior recognition of this crime.”
Kengne noted that a shifting geopolitical landscape and Algeria's growing ties with BRICS nations have strengthened the country's position in this political and historical dispute.
