South Sudan's Army Regains Control of Major Eastern City in Jonglei State
The forces have liberated the strategic border town of Akobo, killing over 50 rebel fighters and capturing a number of vehicles and heavy machine guns, army spokesman General Lul Ruai Koang announced.
Authorities evacuated civilians and aid workers ahead of the offensive, prompting around 200,000 people to leave the town. Following the recapture, General Lul Ruai Koang called on displaced residents to return home and urged UN agencies and humanitarian organizations to resume operations in the area.
The conflict reignited in spring 2025, when pro-opposition militias seized several northeastern cities after the arrest of opposition leader Riek Machar on treason charges.
Meanwhile, Jonglei State’s Finance Minister Donge Gai Donge has recently told Sputnik that the eight-year-old peace deal remains on track and irreversible, with government bodies witnessing stability despite reports of clashes.
