South Africa Aims to Lead Africa’s Digital Transformation as Digital Economy Could Reach $712 Billion: Official

South Africa plans to begin its cooperation with countries already part of the International Telecommunication Union’s network of acceleration centers, including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Gabon, and Egypt, Jeanette Morwane told Sputnik Africa.

This helps governments exchange experience and work together on advancing digital technologies across the continent, she explained.

One of the key advantages of working through international technology networks is access to research that helps countries identify which emerging technologies are gaining momentum and where new market opportunities may appear, she said.

Morwane noted that this is already visible in areas such as blockchain and digital finance, where African startups are building practical tools for everyday use.

“If you look at the issues of blockchain and cryptocurrency, there are already quite a number of tech startups that are taking advantage of that, and they are developing financial system solutions for people in townships to use.”

She added that the government’s role is not only to support adoption but also to build a national roadmap and strengthen cybersecurity protections so that people using these new digital services can do so more safely.
