Instability in Strait of Hormuz Threatens to Rock All of Africa, Says Socio-Economic Researcher
Africa's reliance on imported oil and global shipping routes leaves it exposed to instability in the Middle East, Mohammed Ibrahim of Assosa University told Sputnik Africa.
"This vulnerability suggests that Africa needs to strengthen its energy security by expanding its domestic refining capacity," he said.
Ibrahim outlined two key solutions for Africa to protect itself from economic shocks:
🟠Leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area to stop exporting raw materials and importing expensive refined petroleum products
🟠Strengthening regional energy cooperation by sharing oil refineries and building cross-border electricity connections
"This is necessary to encourage industry and the manufacturing sector to produce value-added products domestically," he concluded.
