African 'Dandies' in Moscow: A Photographic Exhibition Transcending Geographic & Cultural Borders
From February 25 to April 12, the Béton Center of Visual Culture hosts a unique visual encounter between two major names in sub-Saharan photography: Congolese Baudouin Mouanda and Malian Malick Sidibé.
Malick Sidibé — legend, first photographer to win the Golden Lion in Venice (2007). His "Christmas Eve" (1963) ranks among Time's top 100 photographs.
Baudouin Mouanda — sharp contemporary gaze on the post-war era, globally renowned for his "La Sape" series.
Though they never met, both immortalized the same heroes: the sapeurs — flamboyant evening icons. This social and aesthetic movement represents a genuine form of identity expression and cultural resistance, celebrating elegance and refinement as means of self-affirmation.
"African photographers have much to show the world," says Béton founder Olga Michi.
The exhibition features works from private collections in France, Italy, Morocco—and, of course, Mali, Congo, and Béton's own collection.
According to Olga Michi, despite sanctions and geopolitical storms, collectors, gallerists and artists still wish to collaborate with Russia.
