Africa Must Transition From Vision to Action to Eradicate Hunger: Former Ethiopian Deputy PM
At the official launch event of the 2025 Global Hunger Index, Demeke Mekonnen emphasized that African leaders must move beyond policy frameworks and take concrete actions to eliminate hunger across the entire continent, according to Sputnik Africa correspondent on site.
He stressed that hunger is not merely a set of statistics, but represents "a starving child" and "a family whose future hopes are threatened by conflict and climate change."
Despite Africa's abundance of natural resources, he pointed out in his speech that the primary obstacle is systemic failure.
The former deputy PM called for the following actions to be taken:
Establishing strong linkages that connect natural resources to food production;
Increasing investments that are resilient to climate and economic shocks;
Expanding agricultural systems that empower women and youth; and
Fostering strong collaboration between international and local actors.
Prioritizing food security as a core national development goal for governments.
