Rising Middle East Tensions Fuel Calls for Strategic Autonomy in Global South: South African Analyst
Emerging powers often challenge the existing international system when their interests are not adequately represented, Naledi Masango told Sputnik Africa. This dynamic, she explained, is partly why countries formed alliances such as BRICS to assert their influence in global governance structures traditionally dominated by Western powers.
The US, as a global hegemon with hundreds of military bases worldwide, has historically shaped the security architecture many nations depend on, the analyst noted. However, as Washington faces increasing strategic challenges, reliance on Western security guarantees is becoming more uncertain.
According to Masango, this evolving geopolitical landscape raises questions about national survival and security, pushing countries to consider building their own military capabilities and strategic alliances instead of relying solely on the US.
BRICS may eventually need to reconsider its current role as primarily an economic bloc, she added. Just as the group created institutions like the New Development Bank as alternatives to Western-led financial institutions, it may also need to deepen security cooperation in response to growing global instability.
Africa must approach the shifting geopolitical environment carefully, Masango stressed. As a resource-rich continent supplying a large share of the world’s minerals, Africa’s strategic importance is growing, making it essential for the continent to develop calculated policies to protect its interests in an increasingly fragmented international system.
