'South Africa's Bill of Rights Сontinues to Inspire African Countries': South African Expert
South Africa's Bill of Rights serves as a model for other countries, especially in Africa, during their constitutional drafting or review processes, Tendai Mbanje, Regional Governance and Election Expert at the African Centre for Governance, told Sputnik Africa, celebrating the bill's 30th anniversary during Human Rights Month in South Africa.
The South African Bill of Rights is unique in explicitly enshrining socio-economic rights alongside civil and political freedoms, guaranteeing access to housing, health care, food, water, and education, he noted.
Beyond constitutional guarantees, Mbanje emphasized civic engagement and accountability.
"Rights on paper must translate into lived realities of the people. [...] Monitoring mechanisms should be reinforced to uphold and to ensure that they hold the government accountable."
He also emphasized the need to communicate rights effectively to citizens, especially young people, using platforms and methods they understand. He suggested engaging them in playful ways while ensuring the message remains impactful.
The Bill of Rights, he argued, remains a benchmark for democracy, civic participation, and holistic human dignity across the continent.
