Multilateral Order Is Unraveling: Analyst
Recent strikes involving the US and Israel in Iran highlight the weakening of the global multilateral system, Rashid Abdi, researcher and analyst on the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, told Sputnik Africa.
While the actions may have political justifications for those involved, he noted they are difficult to defend from an international law perspective.
Diplomacy between the parties was not given enough time, Abdi said, stressing that the focus should now shift toward de-escalation and renewed negotiations. Stability in the Middle East is closely tied to Africa’s stability, as Iran remains a major regional power, he noted.
According to the analyst, the crisis underscores a broader challenge for the international community: preventing powerful states from bypassing the UN Charter.
"The UN system, you know, ultimately is the only tool we have to stabilize the world, he said, adding that cooperation among multiple global and regional actors will be necessary to restore dialogue and reduce tensions.
