Africa Has Immense Opportunity in Climate Tech, Industrial AI & Sustainable Infrastructure: Nigerian Scholar
In an interview with Sputnik Africa on International Women’s Day, Maimuna Umar Zarewa, a Nigerian PhD researcher who developed an AI-powered device to detect metal corrosion, explained that her curiosity led her to study corrosion not just as a chemical process, but as an industrial risk costing billions annually and threatening environmental safety.
Traditional monitoring methods, she said, were reactive and fragmented, inspiring her to create a system that detects corrosion chemically, analyzes patterns intelligently, and responds autonomously.
“This moment shows that AI can democratize resilience in contexts where infrastructural monetary sources are limited,” Zarewa said, highlighting AI’s potential to optimize risk detection with fewer human and financial inputs and enable predictive action instead of reactive crisis management.
