Women 'Bear Direction the World Takes': Ugandan Researcher

“Technology is here to help us; technology is there to improve how we handle problems,” Stella Nakirijja, a researcher at the Makerere University’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering in Kampala, told Sputnik Africa on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Nakirijja is using technology to tackle one of livestock farming’s persistent challenges — tick infestations. She has developed a solar-powered tick detector that uses artificial intelligence to identify parasites on animals, helping farmers detect them earlier and better protect livestock.

Similar technologies could also help farmers detect pests in crop farming, making agriculture more efficient if properly supported and scaled, she added.

Nakirijja acknowledged that women in science and innovation still face stereotypes.

"Society believes a woman comes second; society believes the woman cannot do certain things and their brains come after the man," she said.

However, she emphasized that such attitudes no longer discourage her. Instead, she focuses on her goals and encourages other women to pursue their ambitions and speak up for themselves.
