GoldBod, the country’s sole official buyer and exporter of ASM gold, has prepared contingency routes outside the United Arab Emirates, though no disruptions have been reported yet, a senior official said without naming destinations.
Traders suggest possible alternatives include Shanghai and refining hubs in India, but these would be more costly.
If the Middle East conflict continues, GoldBod’s contingency plans would be crucial to limit economic fallout, a source at a Ghana-based ASM gold company noted. A no-fly zone, the source warned, could severely disrupt trade and foreign exchange, potentially weakening the local currency and harming the economy.
