LNG Terminal Could Transform KwaZulu-Natal’s Energy and Economic Landscape, Vopak South Africa President Says
The project, a joint venture between Vopak South Africa and Transnet Pipelines, will receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) by ship, convert it back into gas, and distribute it through pipelines to customers, Oliver Naidu explained in an interview with Sputnik Africa.
The development goes beyond energy infrastructure.
“Having the first LNG terminal in Richards Bay is obviously going to change the local community,” he explained, highlighting construction, skills development, and new industries expected to emerge around the project.
The terminal will also support gas-to-power projects, including Eskom capacity and independent power producers, potentially delivering several gigawatts of electricity. According to Naidu, this integrated system could bring broader economic stability while opening new career opportunities for local talent.
Currently in Phase 1, the project has completed the pre-feed study. Naidu reveals that in a few months, they will sign the heads of agreement, marking the start of the feed process. With a target for a financial investment decision in Q1 2028, Vopak aims to begin execution soon after.
