Algerians' Wallets May Be Affected by Middle East Conflict: Economist

Algeria — a major importer of wheat and barley — may fear the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, Algerian Economist Abd Al Qadir Al-Suleimani told Sputnik.

“There will be an indirect impact due to inflation because of the closure of maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Freight, transport and ship insurance costs will increase, particularly those coming from Asia,” he stated.

Algeria can diversify its grain suppliers by developing commercial ties with Europe or Latin America but the country also imports industrial and semi-finished products from Asia, he reminded.

"Algeria has launched numerous projects on the path to economic sovereignty. Thus, the Middle East war has both direct and indirect impacts on Algeria," Expert added.
