'Unjustified, Illegal Attack:' South African Religious Leaders Call for Peace Amid Middle East Conflict
Religious leaders in South Africa have expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the Middle East following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They are urging for dialogue, humanitarian efforts, and peacebuilding.
The South African Hindu Maha Sabha condemned the suffering of innocent civilians, calling for “dialogue, diplomacy, and non-violent pathways.”
The South African Muslim Network (Samnet) highlighted the long-standing tensions between Iran and the US, stressing that Iran's actions were not the cause of the conflict.
“In its 5,000-year history, Iran has never attacked any sovereign nation. In modern history, it has been subjected to US orchestrated attacks from Iraq, punishing sanctions for the past 30 years. There have been multiple attempts at regime change, overthrowing the government, and destabilisation of the government,” Samnet's head Faisal Suliman said.
Suliman also noted that Iran had repeatedly allowed international inspections of its nuclear program, arguing that the country had cooperated with monitoring mechanisms despite ongoing pressure and sanctions.
