Nigeria Accelerates Its Space Ambitions: Tinubu Unlocks Funds for Program Revival
The step is aimed not only at improving the country's space capacity but also at enhancing the lives of ordinary Nigerians, according to government officials.
At the inaugural National Space Council meeting, Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of the president, declared, "Nigeria will not watch the new frontier unfold from the sidelines. We will participate, we will compete, we will contribute."
President Tinubu further emphasized that the space program must serve all citizens, spanning agriculture, education, science, entrepreneurship, and defense, while also driving technological advancement and economic diversification.
To support these goals, the council will continue developing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Space Center in Ekpe to boost satellite launch capabilities.
A Legacy in Space
Nigeria stands as one of the first African nations to adopt a national space policy. Its formal space program was approved in 2000, and by 2005, the country had introduced the concept of a 25-year roadmap to guide its long-term ambitions.
