South Africa Deploys Military to Support Police in Fight Against Gang Crime, Illegal Mining: National Police Commissioner

Expected to run until March 31, 2027, the operation will focus on reducing crime through arrests; the seizure of illicit firearms, ammunition, and explosives; and the confiscation of criminal equipment and narcotics.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, together with National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, announced the plan while briefing a joint meeting of Parliament’s Police Committee and Committee on Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

Priority areas include:

Cape Flats in the Western Cape

Parts of the Eastern Cape

Illegal mining hotspots in Gauteng, North West, and Free State.

The deployment follows plans earlier announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address.
