Burundi Formally Nominates Former Senegalese President Macky Sall for UN Secretary-General
UN General Assembly spokeswoman La Neice Collins confirmed Sall's nomination by Burundi, the current chair of the African Union.
Sall is one of several nominees vying to succeed Antonio Guterres, whose term ends on January 1, 2027.
Other candidates:
🟠Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile
🟠Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA (Argentina)
🟠Rebeca Grynspan, former vice president of Costa Rica (nomination not yet officially submitted)
The selection process began in November, with nominations open until July. The Security Council must begin its review by the end of July.
Candidates may be nominated by any member state or group of states, not necessarily their country of origin.
