US Imposes Sanctions on Rwanda's Military Over Role in Eastern DRC Conflict

The AFC/M23 rebel group's territorial gains in eastern DRC would have been "impossible without Rwandan support," the US Treasury Department stated.

Key points:

🟠The Sanctions: Targeted Rwanda's defense forces and senior military officials, including the army chief of staff, the chief of defense staff, and commanders of special operations and infantry divisions.

🟠DR Congo's Reaction: Kinshasa welcomed the move, calling it "a strong signal in support of respect" for its sovereignty.

🟠Rwanda's Response: Kigali rejected the sanctions, saying they "misrepresent the reality" and accused the DRC of failing to honor commitments, including ending support for militias.
