Somali Army & Ugandan Troops from AUSSOM Start 'Operation Rolling Thunder' Against Al-Shabaab
The aim of the operation is to disrupt al-Shabaab's key positions and to cut al-Qaeda*-linked groups from the routes used for terror attacks, the Defense Ministry of Somalia said.
Some other objectives of 'Operation Rolling Thunder':
🟠 weakening of al-Shabaab's operational capacities;
🟠 preventing possible terror attacks by remaining fighters;
🟠 saving civilians, as well as agricuture and production industry.
The ultimate goal of the operation is to eliminate the militant group as a threat to peace and state-building, the ministry added.
Al-Shabaab has been waging wars against the Somali government for more than 16 years. However, they target not only government officials but also peaceful citizens.
Last July, the Somali army, backed mainly by the AUSSOM, launched several operations against the group.
