Kenya to Solarize 3,200 Schools by Next Year: President

Following the success of a pilot program in over 260 schools, the $349,000 initiative aims to replace wood usage with solar energy for cooking, lighting, and other needs, as part of a broader push for renewable energy and climate-friendly infrastructure in public institutions, William Ruto announced.

According to the president, the initiative aims to:

🟠reduce Kenya's carbon footprint,

🟠cut biomass use,

🟠promote green energy for education.

The solar project is expected to generate 780 megawatts of energy, with surplus power being added to the national grid during school breaks, Ruto said.

If successful, it will also reduce schools' reliance on firewood and charcoal for cooking, while lowering electricity costs for institutions with limited energy access.
